Environment Our Mission The GFWC Environment Community Service Program encourages us to become stewards of the earth by working to preserve the world’s resources, protect wildlife and domesticated animals, live sustainably, and beautify our communities and enjoy nature. Environmental degradation is cumulative, and many scientists warn that we are at a tipping point. There is no time like the present to act. Where is SAWC's Garden on the Salem Bike Ped Corridor Our garden is located on Hampshire Road across the field from Pep Boys. GPS: 9 Hampshire Road, Salem, NH Before September 2023 April Update SAWC Trash Squad Takes on the Veterans Parkway April 11, 2024 Despite the gloomy and damp weather, a group of dedicated members swarmed the Veterans Memorial Parkway in Salem picking up litter. Donning high-visibility vests, boots, rain gear, hats, and gloves, they worked in pairs to tackle the task at hand. As they worked, the sound of laughter and chatter filled the air, and it was inspiring to see how the group remained cheerful and motivated. At one point, a member discovered a soaked $100 bill, but upon closer inspection, it was discovered that it was a fake. Despite the false alarm, the group remained in high spirits and continued their efforts to keep the parkway clean and beautiful. Linda Harvey, who is a member of both the Environment Committee and the Conservation Commission, along with Linda Simmons, Mike Banks, and Glen Edwards, volunteered to clear the brush on the Town Forest trails. The Salem Town Forest is situated on Shadow Lake Road, opposite Shadow Lake, and parking is available next to the NH Dept. of Transportation Salt Storage Shed. September Update SAWC Gets Dirty for a Good Cause To play, press and hold the enter key. To stop, release the enter key. The Salem Area Women's Club Plants a Stunning Garden For All To Enjoy. September, 2023 Fall is an excellent season for planting, and the Environment Committee of the Salem Area Women's Club took advantage of a beautiful September day to create a new garden along the Salem Bike-Ped Corridor. The garden is located by the Salem/Methuen border and welcomes visitors with various bushes, flowers, and grasses. The club plans to add annuals in the spring and continue maintaining the garden. SAWC is delighted to collaborate with the Friends of the Salem Bike-Ped Corridor in their efforts to enhance and beautify the corridor, which stretches from the Massachusetts border to the Windham Rail Trail. This particular section is a significant step towards the broader goal of the Granite State Rail Trail Association, which seeks to connect the rail trail from Salem to Lebanon, NH, creating a continuous trail that spans 100 miles.

Social Committees What's that famous saying? "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy?" Unfortunately, as a group of women who love to give back to communities by volunteering our time, talent, and treasure, we tend to forget to care for ourselves. Taking time to recharge our batteries is very important, and by doing it within SAWC, we can continue to build friendships, bonds, and shared experiences. This self-care, in turn, makes us better volunteers! Currently, our IOST activities include the following: Book Club Lunches Movies Walking (Walkie Talkies) And much more in the works... If you have any additional activities you'd like to see SAWC add to the list, don't hesitate to contact our "Captian of Fun," Patti Drelick. - Standing Committees | SAWC
Standing Committees Communication & Public Relations We help facilitate communication for the club. Whether we're working on the monthly newsletter, building the website, promoting partner events, or working with other club members, our goal is the same - help make connections. Hospitality The hospitality committee was formed in November 2023. This group is responsible for the logistics of our monthly meetings. Nominating The Committee has at least three (3) members, elected simultaneously as the Officers, to serve a two-year term. The immediate Past President serves as Chair. Their responsibility is to seek qualified candidates to fill elected positions for the Board of Directors. Every year in February, the Nominating Committee presents its recommendations to the Board of Directors. Telephone Committee This vital group serves to reach out and connect with members to provide personal, friendly meeting reminders and whatever important information is deemed necessary by the Board. Dedicated volunteers work in a "phone tree" fashion to provide vital outreach.

Comfort Bags Comfort Bags As a Health and Wellness Committee project. Linda Molchan proposed a Comfort Bag project for sexual assault patients for two local emergency departments. Linda was a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner for 25 years and stressed the importance of medical care after an assault, as well as providing emotional support. To help sexual assault victims feel more at ease and self-confident before leaving the ER, the Comfort Bags contain toiletries to use while showering and new clothing to wear when leaving the hospital.
