Press Archive News from 2023-2024 Staying Alive: Skills We All Need SAWC GFWC-NH receives valuable training February 19, 2024 February is American Heart Month, encouraging people, especially women, to focus on cardiovascular health. To underscore the significance of heart health, the Salem Area Women's Club expresses its gratitude for the hands-only CPR and AED training its members received after the February meeting. The instruction was conducted by Mike Gordon and Doug Devine of the Salem Fire Department, who meticulously demonstrated step-by-step procedures for CPR and using the AED. Members also developed a clear understanding of what to expect when dialing 9-1-1. These essential skills are immensely valuable, and the club members were eager to learn them, even though they hope they never have to use them. Caregivers Cookie Hugs December 2023 The Salem Area Women's Club GFWC-NH (SAWC) wanted to thank caregivers for their selflessness, compassion, and unwavering dedication to caring for others. Their work touches countless lives and significantly impacts the world. We recognize the challenges and sacrifices that come with being a caregiver and appreciation for your service, The SAWC showed their gratitude by giving each caretaker a “Cookie Hug”. Over 20 SAWC members helped bake, bag, and deliver the Cookie Hugs to the caregivers in our communities. It was heartwarming to witness members taking turns working on the "assembly line" to put the final touches on the gift bags stuffed with cookies, candies, and other treats. Helping hands work together to accomplish great things! With the table overflowing with completed gift bags, it was impossible to count them all, but knowing where they were delivered to, it's clear that we touched at least 200 caregivers in the following communities: •Pelham Good Neighbor Fund •Salem Caregivers •Salemhaven •Silverthorne •Meals on Wheels/Rockingham Nutrition’ •Warde Senior Living We thank Jaimie Baker, Deb Slein, Donna Mason, Maria Baribeau, and Maureen Hanlon, who helped put this together during the craziest time of the year. Women's Club Delivers Appreciation Baskets to Poll Workers March 2023 Salem Area Women's Club members donated over 400 snacks to create Poll Volunteer Appreciation Baskets at the Club's March meeting. Patti Drelick, SAWC President, and Norma Lapointe, Recording Secretary, delivered the baskets on Election Day to eight polling locations in Atkinson, Hampstead, Pelham, and Salem as a Nor'Easter raged. SAWC is grateful to these election-day volunteers who ensure voters receive the assistance they need and help provide a positive and smooth voting experience. The poll workers met the baskets with warm smiles and deep gratitude. Without the hard work and dedication of over 180 volunteer poll workers, our local elections would be impossible. Salem Women's Club Provides Comfort to Sexually Assaulted Victims Every 68 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted; on average, 463,634 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault each year in the United States. The Salem Area Women's Club's Health and Wellness Committee created Comfort Bags to help restore dignity to victims after a medical examination in Emergency Rooms. Medical care is a priority after an assault to screen and treat for injuries and disease. In addition, all victims are offered evidence gathering to identify and prosecute perpetrators, including clothing collection. To avoid leaving the Emergency Department in scrubs, there is a desire for cozy clothing for the victims. To meet this need, the Health and Wellness committee created 30 Comfort Bags containing personal care items, new undergarments, socks, pants, and shirts in various sizes. The Salem Area Women Club members donated all the items, and members even sewed bags. Recently, Parkland Hospital's Sexual Assault Unit Clinical Coordinator, Pam, received bags from Linda Molchon and Connie O'Connell of the Health and Wellness committee. February 2023 February 2023 Women’s Club Delivers a Rhea of Sunshine The Salem Area Women’s Club’s (SAWC) Community Engagement and Outreach committee proudly donated a crash crate ($370) to the Salem Police Department to ensure their comfort dog, Rhea, travels safely during car rides while on duty. Although only seven months old, this beautiful Labrador Retriever is already calm, friendly, and good-natured. Named after the Titan Greek god of comfort and ease, Rhea will continue her training under Officer Brian Lawrence’s direction with the help of Hero Pups in Stratham, NH. In a few more months, she’ll be a valuable resource for trauma victims by providing a therapeutic role as part of SPD’s emergency response services. In addition, Rhea will give unconditional love and support to people on some of their most challenging days. Is there anything more comforting than the reassuring touch of a dog or the sight of a wagging tail? TV Coverage SCTV 17 (sctv-17.com) - watch CE&O January Presentations A big thank you to Susan McLoughlin for filming our event! February 2023 Women's club warms hearts by donating $10K+ The Community Engagement and Outreach committee of the Salem Area Women’s Club donated over $10,000 to five highly deserving organizations. Reaching across the entire southern NH region, Family Promise ($5,000) and Brigid’s House of Hope ($2,500) help vulnerable individuals and families rebuild their lives in secure and caring environments. As food prices continue to climb, the following organizations are imperative to keeping food on tables. End 68 Hours of Hunger of Salem ($1,000) fills the nutritional needs of school-aged children over the weekend, while St. Anne’s Food Pantry ($150) helps reduce food insecurity in Hampstead. Recognizing the sacrifices made by our veterans and those who serve our communities is vital. Therefore, $1,000 was donated to The Homeland Heroes Foundation, Atkinson, which offers an array of supportive services to active-duty service members, veterans, and their families. October 20, 2022

Pictured is Susan Mothon, Phylis Marchulatis (FFTH), Laura Andolino and Deb Slein Hands-Only CPR Training: SFD Visits SAWC Salem Area Women's Club is grateful for the training we received after our meeting on performing Hands-Only CPR and the proper way to use an AED. Mike Gordon and Doug Devine of the Salem Fire Department walked us through both procedures and what to expect when calling 9-1-1. These are all skills we wanted to learn and hope to never use. If you'd like to learn Hands-Only CPR, the American Heart Association is an excellent place to start - https://www.redcross.org/.../performing-cpr/hands-only-cpr or contact your local fire At the February SAWC meeting the CE&O Committee made a $1,000 donation to the Salem Firefighter’s campaign to purchase an emergency responder system app called Handtevy (www.handtevy.com/). This tool will provide our first responders with real-time information on the available medicine/equipment in their vehicle, provide an accurate dosage of medicine based on the victim and trauma type, track timing for follow-on administration of AED & medicine based on the town protocols, and document the emergency response activities. Appreciation Baskets The Salem Area Women’s Club members donated snack baskets to the Pelham and Salem poll workers. The snack donations were collected by SAWC members to express their appreciation to the men & women who volunteered their time to work the polls in local communities. On Tuesday, January 23, Primary Election Day, baskets of snacks were delivered to the Pelham, Hampstead, and Salem NH polling sites. The SAWC volunteers were met with warm smiles and deep gratitude by the poll workers. End 68 Hours of Hunger End 68 Hours of Hunger is a public non-profit effort to confront the approximately 68 hours of hunger that some school children experience between the free lunch they receive in school Friday and the free breakfast they receive in school Monday. Derry SAWC member Connie O’Connell requested that the CE&O Committee reach out to End 68 Hours of Hunger-Derry, an organization that hasn't received donations from SAWC before. The committee visited their location, was impressed by their program, and donated boxes of granola bars and $550 to purchase food for children's meals. Pelham The Civic Engagement Committee of the Salem Area Women's Club contacted the End 68 Hours of Hunger program in Pelham, NH, which was established in 2023. SAWC is familiar with this program and has supported other locations in Salem and Derry, NH. SAWC decided to extend its support to Pelham as well. The Pelham-End 68 Hours program has a space located at St Patrick's Church, where five volunteers store and package 50 bags of food weekly and then deliver them to the Pelham Elementary School. The volunteers' dedication and enthusiasm to support the local community's children in need is impressive. On February 15, 2024, SAWC donated $750 to purchase food, postage stamps, and greeting cards. Salem The Salem Area Women’s Club Civic Engagement Committee reached out to The End 68 Hours of Hunger program in Salem, NH, as we do each year to support this worthy cause. It was decided that instead of a monetary donation we would donate cleaning supplies as we did last year that were very much appreciated. Six of our CE&O Committee members enjoyed shopping at Ocean State Job Lot along with their staff that was extremely helpful in making these large purchases go smoothly! Items purchased in increments of 50 were laundry detergent, stain remover, dish soap, sponges, and all-purpose cleaners. Items were then delivered to the Salem superintendent's office, where donations were packaged and then distributed to families that participated in this program. February Update We Care Emergency Bags In Jan. 2023, the CE&O committee started the "We Care Emergency Bag" project. Donna Mason and Maureen Hanlon identified the need for quick access to necessary items during power outages. They planned, ordered, packaged, and delivered 70 bags to Isaiah 58 and Rockingham County Nutrition. These organizations will deliver the bags to housebound residents and people in need. Hats off to Donna, Maureen, an d the CE&O members for a successful project! Law Enforcement Appreciation SAWC-GFWC members Susan Raymond and Laura Andolino shopped for snacks at BJ's to show appreciation for Pelham Police Department during Law Enforcement Appreciation Month. The presentation was on Jan 22, 2024. Thanks to Celia Lingley and Susan Raymond for organizing the presentation. January Update Gift Card to Benefit Greater Salem Caregivers December 13: SAWC donated this elegant winter greenery centerpiece with a $100 Gift Card to the “Holiday Stroll at Greystone Farms.” The auction of this item and the many others donated benefited the Greater Salem Caregivers. December Update Wreath's Across America December 2023: The Salem Area Women's Club humbly sponsored several Wreath's Across America remembrance wreaths this holiday season. As a service organization, we are incredibly grateful for the women in our club who served and all those who continue to serve our nation. The mission of Wreaths Across America is to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach the next generation the value of freedom. On December 16, at 12 pm, wreaths were laid at the Gibson Cemetery in Pelham. Patti Drelick and Susan Raymond participated in the ceremony and laid wreaths for service members interred there. They both were so moved and impressed with how organized the event was planned and executed with over 550 veterans at the Cemetery. Congratulations to all who helped and made this first-time event in Pelham a success! Comfort with Heat December 2023: The Civil Engagement and Outreach Committee carried out a "holiday giving program" by providing warmth to households in need. The committee partnered with Palmer Gas and Oil, and donated $250 each to two households with overdue heating bills. The aim was to let these families know that they are not alone and that their neighbors are thinking about them. SAWC hopes that this gift will bring a smile to their faces and provide them with peace of mind as they warm their hearts and homes this holiday season. St. Joseph Food Pantry goes green! December 2023: Salem Area Women's Club (SAWC) wanted to help St. Joseph's Food Pantry. The pantry coordinator, Kellie Lavoie, mentioned they needed bags to give out donated food. SAWC partnered with Friends of Rockingham County Aging Adults (FRCAA) and donated 400 reusable shopping bags with both organizations' logos. These bags will provide their patrons with a stronger, eco-friendly way to transport their food. Holiday Parade November 2023: SAWC attended the Salem Holiday Parade, where a refreshment table was set up with hundreds of free snacks and drinks, compliments of the Club. Laura Andolino and President Patti Drelick welcomed many parade participants as they exited shuttle buses or took a stroll while waiting for the parade to step off. A special thanks to John and Nathan Andolino who helped transport and set up the tent for this fun event! November Update SAWC participates in GFWC's National Day of Giving October 2023: GFWC is committed to volunteer community service and will participate in the National Day of Service in October 2023 to help end food insecurity. Salem Area Women's Club donated $162.78 to Bread of Life Food Pantry and $140.38 to End 68 Hours of Hunger. We thank the Civic Engagement and Outreach Committee and all members for their generous contributions. Salem Scramble September 2023: Salem High School hosted the 7th annual Salem Scramble event. Over 500 students from grades 1 to 8 and their families attended the event. The event features an obstacle course where kids can slide down a soapy water slide, climb over walls, dodge balls, crawl through mud, and more. The Salem Area Women's Club had a booth at the event with a ring toss game that was enjoyed by many, resulting in over 300 prize winners. The Club gave away over 100 tootsie pops and 125 bracelets and applied tattoos on participants and their siblings. The event also allowed the Club to let parents and grandparents know more about what they do. October Update September Update
- SAWC History | SAWC
History Our Purpose To broaden and strengthen the moral, social and intellectual life of the members, and through them, to make itself a power for good in the community. (Club bylaws, Article 1: Section 2) Our Roots Since 1926, the Salem Area Women's Club (SAWC) has worked locally to be the power of good in our community, making a difference through philanthropy and outreach programs while fostering connections, awareness, and life-long friendships. SAWC currently stands at 100+ members strong and has donated more than $40,000 to nearly 50 organizations throughout the past year. SAWC is a proud affiliate of the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) and GFWC-New Hampshire. Founded in 1890, GFWC is an International women's organization dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. Collectively, we are Living the Volunteer Spirit. GFWC-NH's purpose is to bring together all General, Junior, and Juniorette Clubs in the State for cooperation and mutual helpfulness and to promote the highest interest of the community and State. SAWC is considered a 'General' Club. Our Story As our club prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026, we will continue learning about our organization's rich history. If you have any stories, documents, photos, etc., about SAWC, please email SalemAreaWomensClub@gmail.com . We'd love to add your story to ours. We've obtained membership lists from the 1930-1990s. Please feel free to review the .pdfs to find friends, neighbors, and relatives. 1930s 1940s 1950s 1960s 1970s 1980s 1990s A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SALEM WOMAN'S CLUB 1926-1931 WRITTEN BY MISS MILDRED WHEELER On the afternoon of February 15, 1926 a group of women interested in forming a woman's club in Salem met at Wade's barn (now Dr. Kellett's office) to discuss the organization. Mrs. Alta McDuffee of Alton, NH, past president of the state federation was present and gave facts concerning the work and ideals of the State and General Federations. No organization was undertaken at this time, but a membership committee and a committee to draft a constitution and by-laws were appointed. The second meeting of the proposed club was held in the same place on the afternoon of February twenty-second. Mrs. Eva Speare, president of the State Federation was present and gave much help and information. The constitution as drawn up by the committee previously appointed was read and adopted, the first article of which states that the club shall be called the Salem Woman's Club and shall be federated with the State and General Federations. In accordance with the constitution a nominating committee was chosen. Thus the Salem Woman's Club was organized as such on February 22, 1926. At this time it was voted to hold the meetings the first Monday afternoon of each month from October to May inclusive. The first regular meeting of the club was held on March first of that year when the following list of officers was submitted by the nominating committee: President: Mrs. Alice Noyes Brown 1st Vice President: Mrs. Esther P. French 2nd Vice President: Mrs. Jennie I. Kine Recording Secretary: M.M. Wheeler Corresponding Secretary: Mrs. Margurite A. Nutting Treasurer: Mrs. Esther E. Seifert Board of Directors: Mrs. Nellie E. Parker, Mrs. Flora A, Doble and Mrs. Annie Sleeper There were one hundred charter members. The club became federated on May 4, 1926. During its first year, our club was represented at the State Federation meeting, the field meeting in Nashua and at the District Conference in Derry. We were entertained by the Windham Woman's Club, the Men's Club of the Methodist chuch at Ayers Village, Massachusetts and the Derry Woman's Club. A club field meeting was held at Mrs. Wheeler's when Mrs.Flora Spalding of Manchester was the honor guest. The club supervised a fashion show which was conducted by Wm Filene's Son's Co. of Boston and held in the auditorium. Club members and Woodbury High School students acted as models. This show was held in conjunction with the Domestic Arts Department of the high school. We also gained much from a color clinic the following spring which was given by a representative of the same company. Mrs. Foisie of Pelham entertained the club at its second field meeting when the Milford Woman's Club members were our guests. The club membership for the first year was 103. Practically the same officers were elected for the year 1927- 1928. Before the club year really began Mrs. Brown resigned and Mrs. Ruth F. Wade was elected to be president. It was during this year that a fine sum was realized from the so-called vanishing parties. Three hundred dollars was raised by our club help in for saving Franconia Notch through the earnest efforts of our committee. The club was represented at the State Federation meeting and at the District Conference at Hollis. The club sponsored the Banquet for the Girls Basket Ball team of Woodbury High School. The membership for this year was 61. Mrs. Esther P. French was elected to be president for the year 1928-29. Members attended the field meeting at Durham, the District Conference at Milford and the New England Conference held at Swamscott, Massachusetts. A style show was conducted by Jordan Marsh Co. of Boston which was carried out in a similar manner to the one the previous year. Again this year the club sponsored the Banquet for the Girls Basket Ball team. These proved to be very pleasing affair although not successful in a financial way and because it seemed very hard to arouse enough interest among the parents, it has seemed unwise to continue them. The club members made a pilgrimage to the Meadowbrook Laundry and by so doing received a liberal amount of money to be used for charity. The club membership for this year was 58. Mrs. French was also president during the next year when there were the usual activities. Members attended the Field Meeting at Hampton Beach and the District Conference at Manchester. A fashion show was conducted by Jordan Marsh Co. Members and high school students acting as models. The membership for this year was 42. This, our present club year bids fair to compare favourably with the other years of our club. Our president, Mrs. Marion P. Gonnam is doing splendidly. The proceeds of several successful card parties have added to the treasury and the usual club activities are being carried out. Our program committee departed from the ordinary and we are enjoying papers by our own members on the subject "Men and Things of the Granite State". Throughout our five years we have had quite varied programs and many speakers among whom were Mr. Ernest Silver, pricipal of Plymouth Normal School and Mr. J. Wm. Crowell, both native sons, each giving an interesting and instructive talk before the club. Others who have spoken are Judge Alden Alby, Mr. Winthrop Carter, president of the Nashua Horticultural Society, Miss Meda Cree, superintendant of a Massachusetts Training School, Mrs. Eva Reed of the State Board of Charities and Correction, Miss Elena Crough, who spoke on District Nursing, Mrs. Eggleston who gave us much of interest concerning China, Mrs. V. N. Sikorsky who told us about Russia and Mr. Walter Hale who gave an illustrated lecture on "Forestry". We have held several successful bakery sales and three flower shows when a surprisingly large display of flowers were exhibited. We have entertained all State Presidents since we became federated, Mrs. Sara Simpson chairman of the State Federation music committee has also been our guest. During the year that Mrs. Speare laid such stress on the preservation of historical folk tales, our club members contributed several of interest. Through the educational fund of the State Federation, a Woodbury High School graduate is receiving normal school aid. This is a very worthwhile and worthy case. At holiday time, the club does much to aid needy failies with food and clothing. This is ably cared for by our Civics Committee. Each year, this club gives help at the locall Baby Clinics which are conducted by the State Board of Health. SAWC received this document in 2022. Social Committees What's that famous saying? "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy?" Unfortunately, as a group of women who love to give back to communities by volunteering our time, talent, and treasure, we tend to forget to care for ourselves. Taking time to recharge our batteries is very important, and by doing it within SAWC, we can continue to build friendships, bonds, and shared experiences. This self-care, in turn, makes us better volunteers! Currently, our IOST activities include the following: Book Club Lunches Movies Walking (Walkie Talkies) And much more in the works... If you have any additional activities you'd like to see SAWC add to the list, don't hesitate to contact our "Captian of Fun," Patti Drelick. H&W Updates Updates Mar '24 Feb '24 Jan '24 Dec '23 Nov '23 Oct '23 June '23 April '23 March '23 Feb '23 Jan '23 April Update Health and Wellness April 2024 Spring is finally here and we have continued to have good luck with this mild winter! It is a wonderful time of year to see all the new growth popping up from the ground and our trees budding! Let it be an inspiration for us to get outside more and enjoy nature. I hope you are all continuing to do your walking especially when the weather is good. Do not forget to enter your hours under the GLOW. The Health and Wellness Committee completed 20 Comfort Bags for the hospitals in March. They came out awesome and are so appreciated. Once again thank you to all who contributed. Hard to believe that we began our visit to the participants at Silverthorne for over a year now and they are so appreciative and welcoming to us. We visit once a month after our monthly meeting and do an activity for their patrons. Some of us also visit on other days also as we have found this to be so rewarding. We sometimes play games, read and try to do an activity with the participants. This month will be a Spring Theme and I welcome anyone who would like to join us. Maria’s ability to speak Italian has brought such a smile and so much joy to one of the residents. We have fun and have grown attached to this activity. Another project we will be completing for Silverthorne is the Clothing Protectors. As you can imagine it is difficult for some participants with physical limitations to eat and stay neat. I can relate to that also!!! I want to thank 4 women who volunteered to sew these bibs – Sandra Demers, Linda Simmons, Donna Mason and Shamim Calcuttawala. We could never achieve what we have without women stepping up to help. A new project for this year that we have had a bit of trouble getting off the ground is our Caregivers Project. Many of the women in our club are full time caregivers and we recognize that they often need support. We do so much in the community but we also need to be helping our sisters. We are looking for volunteers to assist in this project. Something as little as making a phone call to check in, dropping off a meal or just stopping in to visit can really make an impact in someone’s day. If you can help with this, please let me know @lmolchan@comcast.net . As always, I would hope that we will continue to support each other in any way we can. Wishing you al the best of health and happiness! Happy Spring! March 2024: The month of March will be a very busy time for all. We have 2 big holidays to celebrate (St Patrick’s Day and Easter). Our theme for our Silverthorne visit after our meeting on the 5th will be a St Patrick’s Day activity. Always so much fun and anyone who would like to join us is so welcome! The Health and Wellness Committee will be busy delivering Comfort Bags and working on getting Clothing Protectors made. We also plan to get our Caregivers Program rolling. Stay tuned! Looking up health issues this month, I found one we have not discussed before. National Sleep Awareness Month is observed in March! Adequate sleep is vital for overall health and well-being, yet many people struggle with sleep-related issues such as insomnia, sleep apnea, or restless leg syndrome. In March, organizations and healthcare professionals promote education on good sleep hygiene practices, such as maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, creating a relaxing bedtime routine, and ensuring a comfortable sleep environment. Fostering a greater understanding of the significance of quality sleep is so important. This month we encourage you to prioritize your sleep health for optimal physical and mental functioning. Sleep well! The Health and Wellness Committee wishes you all the best of health and happiness! March Update February Update February, 2024: What a month January was! We have seen every kind of weather and lots of illnesses. A reminder to all to please take care with weather extremes and icy walkways and please stay home if you are not feeling well. The Health and Wellness Committee is excited to move forward into 2024 to reach out and improve the lives of others. During January, we presented donations to Silverthorne for their scholarship program, Up Reach, which provides financial support to those who may not be able to afford to otherwise, Therapeutics for their wonderful work supporting those with disabilities, and The NH Children Trust for their work with supporting families. We continue to support Silverthorne through our volunteer work, and we have found that doing this brings us so much joy. Connie sure can dance! After our February meeting, we will do a Valentine's Day craft with the participants and would love some help! As of the end of January, we will complete and fill the toiletries portion of our comfort bags. Once again thank you all for your contributions! Your generosity is so appreciated. The plan for our February meeting is to put all the clothing articles together and the bags will be ready for us to donate to local hospitals for Sexual Assault patients and some to the Domestic Violence patients. We will continue to work on our new Project, helping our fellow sisters who are full-time caregivers. We will keep everyone informed on this as we gather the information from the surveys. February is heart health month, so please remember that your healthcare provider is your best resource as they know your medical history, but here are the recommended tips. Healthy Diet Manage Stress Regular exercise Know your family history Healthy weight Keep your regular checkups with your provider Do not smoke Limit Alcohol Control Diabetes We can have a healthy conversation about these tips at our February Meeting. Stay Safe! January Update January, 2024: As we welcome this New Year, the Health and Wellness Committee is excited to meet all our resolutions to improve the lives of others. A group of us visited Jeans’ Place in November, and we are excited to share this information with you at our upcoming meetings and we are adding this wonderful place to our Mental Health support. Our next Health and Wellness meeting is scheduled for January 22nd at 1 PM at the Kelly Library. We will bring all the donated toiletry items and fill those bags. We would love more people to join us, as many hands make less work. So, if you are interested, please feel free to join us. We plan to assemble all the clothing items and complete the bags during our February meeting. These bags will be donated to local hospitals for Sexual Assault patients and some of the Domestic Violence patients. We are in the depths of flu season, RSV, and Covid, so please be aware of your health risks and heed the advice of your primary care providers for vaccines. I wish you all the best in Health, Happiness and Joy. Happy New Year to all! December Update December 2023: The Health and Wellness Committee continues to move forward with our mission to spread happiness during this holiday season. Many of us are going to Silverthorne for an hour or two every month to help this facility bring joy to the participants. Due to the closure of 3 adult care centers in NH, they are at maximum volume and can use our assistance. Please consider giving some time as you will receive more than you give. Some of us will also continue to do this after our general meeting so anyone who would like to participate, please join us. The donations for the Comfort Bag Project are greatly appreciated and we should be all set. Some of the socks donated at the last meeting were added to this so we are looking good. The plan will be to put the bags together after the New Year. Some of our members will be touring a new mental health facility that provides housing for homeless clients and we will be excited to share the information at our upcoming meetings. Just a reminder to continue to do your walking for the GLOW Program. We encourage you to get together with a friend and enjoy the outdoors while we can. remember to add your hours on our website under the Health and Wellness section - GLOW. Our committee will not meet during the month of December but will pick up again on Monday January 22nd from 1P – 3P at the Kelly Library in the Breen Conference Room. During the next 6 months we would love to have you join us if you are interested in helping us. Just a reminder to all that we are entering Flu season, RSV season and unfortunately Covid is still around. At this time, we will be attending family gatherings and functions so please if you are ill be mindful of taking precautions. Please follow the advice of your primary care provider for vaccine information. The Health and Wellness Committee sends all our best wishes to our fellow sisters for a Very Happy and Healthy Holiday Season! November Update November 2024: The Health and Wellness Committee is excited to come together for another year of health and happiness. As we plan for the year ahead, watch for opportunities to volunteer at Silverthorne for an hour or two every month to help this facility bring joy to the participants. Sheila Casey is taking the lead on developing a schedule, and please consider giving some time. We will also continue to do this after our general meeting until we have a schedule, so anyone who would like to participate, please join us. November is Alzheimer's Awareness Month. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia. This progressive brain disease develops slowly but has a huge impact on those who are living with it, their families, and caregivers. The number of people living with Alzheimer's disease is growing. Therefore, our H&W Committee, in partnership with The Residents of Salem Woods, invites you to join us via Zoom to learn effective approaches to communicate and care for someone with dementia, as well as how to effectively connect with and engage your loved one. Presented by Amber Evans on November 13, 2-2:30 pm. RSVP by November 9 to Brittany Talbot, btalbot@residencesalemwoods.com , 603-890-0580 The donations for the Comfort Bag Project are greatly appreciated, and we only need a few more shampoos, conditioners, and soaps, and we should be all set. The plan will be to put the bags together after the New Year. We have two new Mental Health Projects in the discussion phase, so be on the watch for more information. Please continue to do your walking for the GLOW Program. We encourage you to get together with a friend and enjoy the outdoors while we can. We are not designating a day or time as everyone's schedules are different. Our committee will meet monthly on Mondays from 1P – 3P at the Kelly Library in the Breen Conference Room. The dates for the next 6 months will be 10/23, 11/27, 1/22, 2/26 ,3/25 and 4/29. We would love to have you join us if you are interested in helping us. We have donated to The Salem Caregivers Event, The Upper Room and Kulea so far this year. Lots planned for the coming year and will report monthly at the general meeting. Just a reminder to all that we are entering Flu season, RSV season, and unfortunately, Covid is still around. Please follow the advice of your primary care provider for vaccine information. October Update October 2023: The Health and Wellness Committee is looking forward to another great year. Hard to believe that summer is over, but we did not lay idle and have planned for the year ahead. The committee still visited Silverthorne in July and September and as always it was great fun. Due to the success of our Club's monthly visits, Silverthorne has asked if we might be able to help in a new way, more often. Rather than a large group of our members going once a month, they are asking for volunteers to come, possibly just two at a time, any day of the month for one hour; either from 11:30-12:30 or 2-3pm. For more details call Sheila at 603-479-1553. The last of the Comfort Care Bags were delivered to the Haverhill YWCA Rape Crisis and Domestic Violence Staff. They were so appreciative and stressed the need. We will commit to doing this again this year. Our committee will meet on 4th Monday of the month from 1P – 3P at the Kelly Library in the Breen Conference Room. The dates for the next 6 moths will be 10/23, 11/27, 1/22, 2/26 and 3/25. We would love to have anyone join us if you are interested in helping us. We have a few things planned for the coming year and will report monthly at the general meeting. Just a reminder to all that we are entering Flu season, RSV season and unfortunately Covid is still around. Please follow the advice of your primary care provider for vaccine information. June Update June 2023: In support of Mental Health, the Salem Area Women’s Club sponsors an event that the Center for Life Management is holding on June 8th at the Atkinson Country Club. We have 14 members attending this event, and Ginger Zee from ABC Good Morning America and Chief Meteorologist-ABC will be the featured speaker. Four women will be able to attend a private reception with Ginger Zee. Their names were selected by a raffle at our Health and Wellness Meeting held on May 8th. The lucky women are: Maureen DiPalma, Marsha Roy, Cindy Hunzelman and Maureen Hanlon. We will also have a networking table at this event where we can highlight the SAWC. We will visit Silverthorne Adult Care after our June meeting to do a fun summer project. We will take July and August off. Just a reminder as we enter summer. With the great weather, there are a few things we definitely want to avoid. I am sure you have heard this a thousand times, but prevention is the best method of avoiding these issues. Sunburn—To avoid this, wear sunscreen and cover up when out in the sun for long periods of time. Applying sunscreen 20 minutes before going out is the best! Mosquito and tick bites – These little creatures carry blood borne illnesses that we fear. Wearing bug repellent is critical to keep these insects at bay. Remember that Ticks must be latched on to the body for 24 hrs. to transmit bacteria so removal asap is important. Disinfect the area with some rubbing alcohol and use some fine tweezers to remove the tick by grabbing as close to the head as possible and firmly pulling back. Do not twist as you remove. You never want to split the tick leaving the head in your skin. Once removed again apply rubbing alcohol to disinfect the area. If you develop a rash at the bite site, headache, fever and muscle soreness call your physician right away. Many physicians will prescribe prophylaxis with antibiotics if you suspect the tick was on you for a long period of time. Poison Ivy, Oak, Sumac – Rashes caused by these plants are due to an allergic reaction. If you are exposed to one of these and know you react you need to wash the area immediately to avoid the discomfort these rashes cause. The Health and Wellness Committee wishes you all a safe and happy summer! April Update April 2023: Spring is almost here, and we have had good luck with this mild winter! The latest March storm was a reminder of what winter is usually like here in New England. My flowers are poking up already. We began our visits to the participants at Silverthorne in March and they welcomed us to visit once a month and do an activity for their participants. We really had a great time there and Sheila, Maria and I did 3 activities with the participants who were very engaged. We played a game, read a story and colored shamrocks. Maria’s ability to speak Italian was so appreciated by one of the ladies and the smile she gave when listening to Maria was worth a thousand words. Thank you, Maria! I am hoping we can continue to do this every month after our meeting. The plan for April will be an Easter Theme. Connie has come up with a craft idea already and we will do another game to add some physical activity and we will read an Easter story. It really is a fun and rewarding experience. So, if anyone is interested, please let me know and plan to join us after the meeting on April 4th. The walking Club has met with bad weather for the past few weeks, but we will continue to do group walks meeting at the rail trail near the parking lot of the Tuscan Kitchen Restaurant on Wednesday mornings at 9AM. We are open to walking in different areas also. If you are walking on your own, please document your hours on our website or send to me at lmolchan@comcast.net . The Health and Wellness Committee is having a meeting on March 27th at 1PM. We will meet at Centerpoint Church and will be discussing future projects. We welcome any ideas from our membership. This is your club and we want it to be representative of the women involved. Wishing you all good health and happiness and a very blessed Easter! March 2023 Spring is around the corner, and I hope you are all enjoying this mild winter. Prior to covid, SAWC had an ongoing Club Service Project wherein we would visit Silverthorne Adult Day Center in Salem each month, immediately following our monthly General Membership Meeting. We would like to reactivate this project, starting this month, Tuesday, March 7th. The purpose is to provide and execute an activity with the residents who attend Silverthorne and add some extra sunshine to their day. For March we'll do a St. Patrick's Day activity with them. It will be fun!! Right after our meeting, we will gather together, then drive to Silverthorne (23 Geremonty Drive, between Salem Town Hall and Boys & Girls Club). We'll be there until 3:30ish. We hope you'll join us for this fun and rewarding Service Project! Any further questions, email lmolchan@comcast.net Way to GLOW Walking Club is a program by our Health & Wellness Committee. This is a great group or individual activity that all members can easily participate in. It is recommended that you only need to exercise 30 minutes a day to make a difference in your health. As a club we can do activities together like walk outside at a community trail, at the mall inside when weather is cold or rainy OR incorporate exercise into a meeting. Anyone who would prefer can walk inside your home for thirty minutes. Many of us walk on our own already so we are off to a great start! The Walking Club had its first walk on February 15th and it was lots of fun. We would like to continue to do group walks, meeting at the rail trail near the parking lot of the Tuscan Kitchen Restaurant. The plan is Wednesday mornings at 9am. We are open to walking in different areas also. If you are walking on your own, please document your hours on our website or send to me at lmolchan@comcast.net It's quick and easy to enter on our website: on home page click on 'What we do' tab > Health and Wellness > under 'Current Projects' click on 'Way to Glow!' button, then complete log. Salem Area Women’s Club donates “comfort bags” for sexual assault victims. Connie and I delivered the Comfort Bags to Parkland Hospital, and they were very much appreciated. Thank you to all who have contributed to this project. The Bags going to Holy Family will be delivered in March. Pictured below are Pam of Parkland Hospital, Connie O’Connell of the Salem Area Women’s Club, and the comfort bags. Linda Molchan is taking the picture. March Update February Update February 2023: We have been invited by the State Health and Wellness Community Service Program Chairman to participate in their “Way to GLOW“ Walking Club starting in January 2023. This can be a great group or individual activity that all members can easily participate in. Each Club will need a Club member to be a Walk Club Leader to schedule walks, document the Club members activities, hours and to report Club activities during 2023. I am looking for volunteers to take on this responsibility to schedule a group walk once a month. We can all take turns doing this. There will put a spot on our website to document your hours and I will be happy to submit totals to the state. If you are not using our website, you can email me your hours and I will include them. lmolchan@comcast.net This is a great way to get involved in a state activity and for us all to have some fun and improve our health. The following is directly from the State Chairman: “We are hoping for 100% participation! Let’s start 2023 off right with bees buzzing! We all could use a little more Glimmer and glow in our lives.” January Update January 2023: December was a busy time and the Health and Wellness Committee completed 2 projects to support Sexual Assault Survivors and Domestic Violence Families. The Sexual Assault Project was completed. This involved putting together Comfort Sacks that contained new clothing and toilet articles for women to use after medical exams in the Emergency Department Twenty Sacks have been completed to be given to 2 hospitals in the greater Salem NH Area. Club members have donated most of these items and it is through your generosity that this project has been successful. The second project completed was supporting 4 families who are fleeing domestic violence. Many articles of clothing and household items were donated by club members and a 200 gift Card to Walmart was given to each family to use towards clothing, food needs, and hopefully a Christmas gift for the children. These items were given to the YWCA to distribute to the families as their locations are kept confidential. We thank club members for their generous support. A new project will begin in 2023. The GFWC NH Health and Wellness Community Service Program Chairman is inviting all GFWC NH Clubs to participate in the “Way to Glow” Walking Club starting in January 2023. This can be done in groups or as individuals, and it is a great way to exercise and improve your health. We will discuss this at our next meeting, and I have ideas on how everyone can participate.

GPS: 9 Hampshire Road, Salem, NH Before September 2023 April Update SAWC Trash Squad Takes on the Veterans Parkway April 11, 2024 Despite the gloomy and damp weather, a group of dedicated members swarmed the Veterans Memorial Parkway in Salem picking up litter. Donning high-visibility vests, boots, rain gear, hats, and gloves, they worked in pairs to tackle the task at hand. As they worked, the sound of laughter and chatter filled the air, and it was inspiring to see how the group remained cheerful and motivated. At one point, a member discovered a soaked $100 bill, but upon closer inspection, it was discovered that it was a fake. Despite the false alarm, the group remained in high spirits and continued their efforts to keep the parkway clean and beautiful. The garden is located by the Salem/Methuen border and welcomes visitors with various bushes, flowers, and grasses. The club plans to add annuals in the spring and continue maintaining the garden. SAWC is delighted to collaborate with the Friends of the Salem Bike-Ped Corridor in their efforts to enhance and beautify the corridor, which stretches from the Massachusetts border to the Windham Rail Trail. This particular section is a significant step towards the broader goal of the Granite State Rail Trail Association, which seeks to connect the rail trail from Salem to Lebanon, NH, creating a continuous trail that spans 100 miles.
